INVESTIGATE AND LEARN
Victoria continues to lose precious lives on its roads.
With no formal driver training, no formal driver responsibility education,
no formal investigative process into the cause of crashes, there will
always be a disaster just around the corner. It is about time that car
manufactures were held to account for the marketing of their cars to
young drivers.
Lets face it Holden has the monopoly on young drivers and cars, high
powered or otherwise. It is a marketing win for them.
It is socially irresponsible the way cars are promoted. With the
Government ready to put in place serious education for binge drinking,
why don’t they do some serious educating about the responsibility
drivers have on the road to all students prior to them getting their
licence?
Deaths on the road are the highest preventable deaths in the
country and yet they are ignored at every level where education is
concerned.
This generation of underage binge drinkers are the next generation of
drivers on the roads.
It is time for Alcohol Interlocks to be looked at for probationary
drivers.
It is time the powers to be started looking at preventing road deaths
instead of standing up and saying their isn’t anything else they can do.
This implies they have done everything and they clearly haven’t.
The Major Collision Investigative Unit is understaffed and over
worked. Crashes will not be expertly investigated because when the
driver dies, no charges will be laid, so therefore there are never any
reports placed about the whys and hows of these crashes occurring.
There is never any investigation as to what driver training has occurred,
if any, and the quality of the person who provided it, yet they tell us that
driver training doesn’t work. How do they know?
They never investigate these things on our roads in our country.
We have 50 serious injuries everyday and these could easily be 50
fatalities every day, which proves that the causes are not changing, yet
they are never investigated by the experts at the Major Collision Unit
because of staffing and a lack of understanding by the government as to
the importance of investigating the causes to prevent further trauma.
Most daily crashes are not even looked at even by the local police, let
alone the experts in crashes, so the driver who runs up your backside
at high speed, who could be drunk or drugged, is never held
accountable for his driving, the cause of the crash is never investigated
and the same carnage continues to happen again and again every day.
Give the Major Collison Investigative Unit the staff and powers to
assault this deep seated problem and rid our roads of the drivers that
choose to ignore simple road laws that cost innocent people their lives.
The government has to stop spinning the road toll because it is giving
people a false sense of security, it is making people believe that the
only people who die on the roads have virtually killed themselves and
this couldn’t be further from the truth. There are many causes of road
trauma and there isn’t reason why they cannot all be addressed at the
same time.
People are multi skilled these days and can cope with more than one
change at a time. When families discover themselves in this horrible
world of road deaths they are shocked at what isn’t in place to protect
them. Even very serious crashes are not investigated if every person is
lucky enough to escape unharmed, regardless of the cause.
The driver may go on and kill somebody the next week and it will be
looked at as a first offence.
Perhaps had warning signs been heeded
and investigated further many families would not be suffering today.
