MEDIA RELEASE DRINK DRIVERS AND ALCOHOL INTERLOCKS
MEDIA RELEASE: JANUARY 5th 2009
ROAD TRAUMA CAUSED BY DRINK DRIVERS
FROM WACD - WORKING AGAINST CULPABLE DRIVING
WACD is calling for Alcohol Interlock Devices to be
mandatory for first time offenders at the point of failure,
not after a licence suspension. Currently the repeat
offender has to apply to the courts for an alcohol
interlock after the suspension period is over. Many of
the states most dangerous drivers are repeat offenders
and not licenced.
The current system isn’t working to protect us.
Our laws are complicated because they still pander to
drinkers who want to drive. Around the world they have
already got tougher with first time offenders.
Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, Nebraska and Washington
State began Jan. 1st 2009 requiring the devices for all
motorists convicted of first-time drunken driving.
Other states with similar laws include New Mexico,
Arizona and Louisiana.
