ARE POINTS WORKING?

Is the current system making drivers less aware of road trauma?

WACD is concerned that the current system of points and speed cameras is actually taking the focus off Road Safety.

The whole process of losing your licence is being desensitized to the point of never even having to say the reason you lost your licence.

If a driver has lost their licence and they are asked what they lost it for the only answer now is    “I lost it on points”

The driver himself never acknowledges any more that  drink driving or speeding was the cause of losing the points.

The game is to keep the points off your licence, share them around with others who haven’t lost any and generally think about everything other than road safety.

I doubt the road safety factor would even enter many drivers head.

Companies with multiple drivers are expert at this, as are trucking companies.

Even Probationary drivers get an option to play with points. They are taught from the word go that the game is to keep your licence

There isn’t any shame in saying you lost your licence on points because most drivers believe they are being ripped off for revenue.

WACD is concerned that if they don’t pull this back into line very quickly, the next generation of drivers will be harder to convince that road safety is the purpose of road laws.

Anybody who has had to get a statuary declaration from the police knows how little it is valued.  It is signed without even looking at it half the time.

Road safety is never discussed or thought of.
